What is the Summer Solstice Challenge?
The Summer Solstice Walking Challenge takes place on the longest day of the year, asking participants to walk for 17 hours straight – from sunrise to sunset – raising awareness of local mental health services and generating vital funds for Lancashire Women and other local charities.
In previous years, walkers have covered between 40 and 55 miles over the course of the day. It’s no mean feat but with the right support around you, it’s absolutely achievable.
The event is intentionally designed to mirror the journey of mental health. There will be highs and lows throughout the day. Moments where you feel unstoppable, and moments where you wonder if you can take another step. But just like mental health recovery, the key is in the community around you and on this day, that community is extraordinary.
Why is this fundraising event important?
Every step you take raises vital funds that go directly towards supporting women and families across Lancashire. Lancashire Women provides free, life-changing services including mental health and wellbeing support, NHS Talking Therapies, money and energy advice, employment guidance, and justice and safety services.
When you walk, you’re not just raising money. You’re walking for the woman who finally asked for help. For the person who thought no one would listen. For the family that didn’t know where to turn. Your miles matter more than you know.
We help women and their families to:
Improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing
Get advice on managing money, benefits and debt
Improve skills, knowledge and gain employment.
Reduce isolation and build relationships with peers.
There is someone who needs you today, and your donation can change her life.
£3 would go towards keeping our community hubs warm and stocked with brews for women that walk through our doors.
£11 would pay for a 30-minute consultation with one of our money advisors.

£49 would mean a client gets an at home energy visit with one of our trained energy advisors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be an experienced walker?
Not at all. Walkers of all abilities take part. The event is fully supported throughout the day, and you’ll never be safe from encouragement, refreshments, or a friendly face.
How much do I need to raise a sponsorship?
Details on fundraising targets and sponsorship are available when you register. Every penny raised goes towards supporting vital mental health and community services across Lancashire.
What should I bring?
Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or boots are a must. We recommend layers, a waterproof jacket, plenty of snacks, a refillable water bottle, and blister plasters.
Can I walk as part of a team?
Yes! Many people take part in pairs or small groups. Walking alongside others makes the tougher stretches far more manageable.
