EMDR

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)?

EMDR has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of PTSD (Post traumatic stress disorder) and is a recommended intervention by the NICE Guidelines (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence)

EMDR is a complex approach to psychotherapy, which most people associate with eye movements. However, it is an accelerated form of information processing. EMDR stimulates the information in your brain allowing your brain to reprocess unprocessed experiences in your life that are causing you issues. The eye movements, or audio tones, or hand taps( a process known as “bi-lateral stimulation”): this helps stimulate the mind and body’s normal, healthy way of processing memories

Who is it for?

Lancashire Women’s IAPT service offers EMDR to people who have experienced a single trauma or possibly more than one trauma. We work with people who have good coping skills in everyday life and who currently have a stable living environment

How might it help me?

EMDR can help you to increase “adaptive information processing” of past memories, improve responses to any current triggers in your everyday life and to plan how you might manage any future triggers or challenging situations.
